NHL 2K9 Review
Wed, 10 Sep 2008 17:33:00 PDT
At first, NHL 2K9 feels downright exhilarating. It offers oodles of monster hits, plenty of opportunities for tape-to-tape highlight-reel goals, and a ridiculous allotment of the plays that make hockey exciting -- stuff like offensive-zone turnovers and bang-bang center-ice counterattacks. Its control scheme is easy to learn, and hey, you can even drive the Zamboni between periods.
It's not surprising then that 2K9's PR blurbs accentuate just that -- the game's low learning curve and high fun quotient. But you can look at those blurbs in a different way. You can see them as a concession of sorts to its one and only rival, Electronic Arts' NHL 09. For as much as the 2K series once challenged NHL for supremacy -- particularly in terms of authenticity -- it is now an obvious runner-up.
